General
Practice, Primary Healthcare - our out patients services
Hope Clinic Lukuli began with Joyce Bbosa as
a solo-midwife helping pregnant women and trying to mitigate
the effects of fevers and diarrhoea in children and adults.
Over ten years later, the patient who arrives at the clinic
- and we are open 24 hours, every day - is most likely
to be an out-patient. Many are reporting fevers, nausea
or vomiting, but infections of the skin or eyes or the
first identifications of malnutrition are equally likely.
The nearest government staffed facility is over 3miles
(5km) by road which takes time and money to reach. The
larger, fee-based hospitals are also 2 miles away and
many clinics that are nearer are run for profit and for
patients with the ability to pay higher prices. Our staff
are highly trained and our range of equipment is above
that normally found at a Health Centre grade III but our
goal to is remove the financial barriers to advice and
diagnosis.

The
original clinic saw very few patients per month, it was
also very small. By 2004, we attended to over 350 a month,
the new premises were built and opened in July 2005 and
out-patients grew to over 600 a month. We asked the community
and they said we provide Affordable Medical Treatment
for Good and Caring Staff. We have kept the charge to
see Omusawo at Shs 1,000 which was the price
of a very basic meal when we started - that meal costs
much more now, but we keep medical consultations accessible
and lab tests are also very fairly priced. A survey we
under took on 2009 revealed that ours is the only lab
functioning after dark in Lukuli parish (home to 12,000
people).
The
out-patients department comprises clinical officers, midwives,
nurses, laboratory and pharmacy staff as well as the counselling
team and community outreach workers. We have three wards
with a total of ten beds if admissions are necessary and
we can refer more serious or surgical cases to larger
hospitals - many patients are reluctant to leave our care!
You can help our work - sponsoring the cost of employing
a nurse or clinical officer means we can reduce or remove
the costs associated with treatment. Our very low consultation
costs are recouped through post-diagnosis care and admissions
but with your help, the burden faced by the patients can
be reduced.
