Working with National and Local Government for Health Services in Makindye

The Makindye Division - one of five making up the city district of Kampala - has approximately 400,000 people. The district and Ministry of Health have limited resources for health service provision, but where government facilities exist the services are free to the public. Hope Clinic is located at 0.276106°, 32.602259°

This aerial view centres on Hope Clinic Lukuli, with the city to the North, Lake Victoria to the South East. The population covered in this map have one government staffed facility (Kiruddu). The local and national government therefore recognise Hope Clinic Lukuli through small grants for immunisation drugs and family planning consumables and we help meet the goals of the government in terms of primary care.

N - St Francis Hospital, Nsambya
(managed by Catholic church and charities)

I - International Hospital Kampala
(private and insurance clients)

K - Kiruddu Health Centre grade III
(the nearest government staffed site)

The government sites are very busy, in part as there have been few additions whilst the population has grown by a third in ten years. Hope Clinic takes up the burden as Kiruddu does not provide delivery care at weekends or at night. Hope Clinic serves the community 24 hours of every day.

In 2011 we are pleased to have discussions with the AIDS Control Programme Ministry of Health to expand the comprehensive HIV services we provide with ARV funded by the government and its partners UNITAID and the Global Fund. With Makindye Council we are planning a public private partnership to remove user fees for deliveries at Hope Clinic to increase our births to 100 a month and over 200 ante-natal check-ups.
