Malaria
in Lukuli - a community greatly affected by malaria
The area served by Hope Clinic Lukuli includes
the wetlands and the waterways that flow to Lake Victoria.
As the population of Makindye has expanded, these previously
swampy, papyrus-covered areas have become the site of
basic housing. In addition to homes being in permanently
damp areas, ideal for mosquitoes to breed, the housing
is very dense and the reservoir of people with malaria
and the mosquitoes ensures constant infections. As waterways
are diverted into culverts around people's walls and alongside
roads, puddles form and will not drain and standing water
is where mosquitoes breed. Among our out-patients, 35-40%
a month are confirmed with malaria parasites.

The laboratory at Hope Clinic Lukuli
provides an essential service. The chart, developed
from the monthly HMIS reports we make to Uganda's
Ministry of Health, shos that 270 to 450 malaria
cases are confirmed each month. Importantly, these
are typically 50-60% of all fevers tested at Hope
Clinic.
This means that the patient without malaria when
then get the right care and medication to mitigate
the viral cause or treat the bacterial or other
parasitic cause of their fever. In Lukuli, malaria
and fever are both common and we serve that need.
